The Engine Behind Our Operations

Did you know the Sportsplex is run by a non-profit society? Our board of directors is a dedicated group of volunteers with a shared commitment – they are dedicated to better health and vitality in our community. Our board guides the Cowichan Sportsplex in decision making, strategizing and innovating new ways to keep the Cowichan Valley healthy and active.

Teri Anslow, President

Teri is a lifelong sports enthusiast and passionate advocate for the benefits of physical activity. After moving to the valley in 1997 with her family, Teri has enjoyed a diverse range of sports and recreational activities, from playing slo-pitch and recreational curling to horseback riding and coaching her daughters in fastball. With a background in sports from her youth and family experiences in Esquimalt and Langford, Teri brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Cowichan Sportsplex Board. Teri joined the board to encourage individuals of all ages to stay active and engaged in physical activity.

Daryl Forbes, Director

Daryl Forbes is the treasurer for the Chesterfield Sport Society. A former albertan businessman Daryl owned a large agricultural company before migrating west to BC. He also was invested in a local tractor equipment sales company here on Vancouver Island.  He’s been the treasurer for the Sportsplex since 2019. In his spare time Daryl enjoys traveling abroad, spending time with his wife and kids as well as walking the black track along the Sportsplex. 

 

 

Ken James, Director

Ken James having been born and raised in the Valley, is the long standing president of the Cowichan Valley Slo-Pitch league (since 2009). Seeing people participating in the league and growing the game while keeping it inclusive to all ages and ability levels has been a particular achievement for Ken. Ken welcomes any new players the the league and invites anyone interested to contact him. Ken has been a strong supporter of sports and recreation in the Cowichan Valley and has been a proud member of the board of directors since 2006.

Cara Light, Treasurer

Cara Light is a chartered accountant working at MNP LLP with over 25 years of expereince helping small business and not for profit organizations succeed. Cara grew up in Sooke, B.C. and spent several years in Calgary, returning to the Cowichan Valley in 2003. A few years after returning to Vancouver Island, her and her husband were introduced to the Ceevacs Roadrunners Club through one of the running clinics and from there, entered the world of running and triathalons. Cara is currently the president of the Ceevacs Roadrunners club society and joined the Chesterfield Sportsplex Society in 2018. Cara beleives that the Cowichan Valley needs great facilities like the Sportsplex to train and promote sports. Past Board positions held include the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation and she is currently a member of the Duncan Daybreak Rotary Club.

Bob Swanson, Director

A Cowichan Valley Resident
since 1963, Bob was a popular Realtor for 20 years prior to opening Swanson Appraisals on July 1, 1988. Swanson Appraisals continued
successfully until Bob’s retirement in 2011. Once Bob closed his business’ doors, he began to look to volunteering within his community. Offering time to organizations as the Salvation Army Kettle Drive, and other non-profit organizations. In 2007 Bob joined Legion Branch 53 and became an active member, participating in Remembrance Day ceremonies and other events and ceremonies each year.  Bob’s latest endeavour was becoming a corporate sponsor for the newly formed College Baseball League  Harbour Cats/Nanaimo Night Owls.  As he awaits the 2022 baseball season to begin, he accepted a seat on the board of directors for the Cowichan Sports Plex.

 

 

 

 

Jim Dias, Secretary

Jim graduated from BCIT Diploma in Business Administration with Honors, 1970. His working career 1970-2010: Retail, Banking, Provincial Government and finally Local Government with the District of North Cowichan 1974-2010, last 20 years as a CAO. Member of the Rotary Club of Duncan since 1991 (25 years). Member of Providence Farm Board 2010-2016, last two as Board Chair. Currently Private Consultant. Chair of Ceremonies for 1991 BC Winter Games held in the Cowichan Valley. Oversaw Men’s Recreational Hockey in BC Seniors Games, also held in the Cowichan Valley.

 

Todd Blumel, Director

Todd is a longstanding Cowichan resident and local businessperson. He has always been heavily involved in sports and has a passion for athletics.  You’ll often find Todd on a downhill mountain bike enjoying some of the many trails Cowichan has to offer. As the former president of Cowichan Track and Field Todd’s decision to get involved with the board of directors came from witnessing other facilities and seeing how great Cowichan Sportsplex is. As a track and field official, he realized how much the facility has to offer and is committed to helping it continue to grow and reach its full potential.

Chris Jaycox, Executive Director

Chris Jaycox has had an accomplished career in sports, business and media as well as being a successful entrepreneur. A former fully sponsored skier, he toured Canada with the TV series “Slopestyle” in the early 2000’s. In 2011 Chris worked with the District of Tofino as their summer programmer putting on successful camps for local kids. He’s thrilled to be living back in the Cowichan Valley working at the Sportsplex as the Executive Director.

Sue Frasier, Director

Sue is originally from Vancouver Island where she raised her family in the beautiful Cowichan Valley. Originally inspired by her high school coach, a passion for field hockey developed when she was a teenager. Sue’s commitment to the sport grew as she played at the Provincial level, traveling across Canada. Her passion for the game eventually saw her become the coordinator of Cowichan Field Hockey.  Even after playing for over 55 years, she continues to referee and is motivated by keeping the Sportsplex in excellent condition. In the past Sue has helped raise funds for the Sportsplex’s turf  and was involved in the 12-hour relay, which turned out to be an excellent fundraiser.  A love for volunteering along with her recreation diploma, make Sue a valued member of the Cowichan Sportsplex Board
